generative somatics (www.generativesomatics.org) is a transformative training and intermediary organization serving the social and environmental justice movements. We run trainings for movement leaders, staff and members in somatics, trauma, & social justice, and work with organizations such as the National Domestic Workers Alliance, Racial Justice Action Center and Black Organizing for Leadership and Dignity. gs is fiscally-sponsored by generationFIVE.

Position Summary:

generative somatics seeks an experienced Development Director to provide leadership, strategic direction, management, coordination, and implementation to expand generative somatics' fundraising efforts. This includes developing and implementing a fundraising plan for cultivating, securing, and maintaining contributions from individuals (through major donor cultivation and grassroots fundraising efforts) and foundations as well as building and sustaining long-term donor strategies and relationships. The Development Director will work closely with the Executive Director and the contracted grants manager to develop strategies and direction and will lead other staff members and volunteers to implement the annual fundraising plan.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prepare annual fundraising goals for major donors, grassroots fundraising, and foundation grants in collaboration with the Executive Director.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan to ensure that the organization meets its annual financial goals and develops a strong financial base for the future.
  • Develop and provide leadership to implement an individual donor program, including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and engagement of individual donors and stewardship of major donors.
  • Identify and cultivate new funding opportunities and develop relationships with individuals, foundations, and other institutional representatives.
  • Support Executive Director, other lead staff and volunteers to fulfill their fund development roles and responsibilities.
  • In coordination with Fund Development strategies, develop effective social media, public relations and communication strategies and key messages for varied donor constituencies.
  • Supervise foundation fundraising and grantwriting consultant in developing foundation fundraising plan and in writing grant proposals and reports.
  • Support ED and other lead staff to align specific fundraising strategies with program and organizational priorities.
  • Create and execute a multi-year plan for the build out of generative somatics' development infrastructure, including but not exclusively its donor database.
  • Plan fundraising cultivation events, and manage volunteers and logistics
  • Manage fundraising campaigns, donations and acknowledgements in donor database, and use data to analyze results and inform planning.


  • At least 5 years of experience leading multi-faceted development programs.
  • Experience in building a comprehensive individual donor program, including cultivating donor relationships, soliciting and securing major gifts from individual donors, grassroots fundraising, and managing and supporting staff and volunteer fundraisers.
  • Experience in building fundraising infrastructure to serve organizational goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability in securing foundation grants and other institutional support, including prospect research, cultivation and writing grant proposals.
  • Ability to prepare effective, compelling messages for prospects and donors, including the use of electronic communications.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to think strategically and broadly and also pay attention to detail.
  • Track record of planning, prioritizing, organizing, and following through with limited resources.
  • Ability to work independently and in partnership with organizational leaders in a rapidly growing organization.
  • Proficiency with computer operations and programs, including donor databases, CRM's such as Constant Contact, Network for Good, etc.
  • Agreement and alignment with generative somatics' vision and values.
  • Commitment to embody gs's methodology for individual leadership development and deepening our staff's collective coordination and relationship.
